I follow Victorias Secret on Pinterest, and today on one of the pictures they posted there were several negative comments such as “eww, skeleton much?” and “gross, her ribs” etc.
I notice the same sort of nonsense during the annual Victorias Secret fashion show, a bunch of tweets like “real girls don’t look like them, they are unhealthy!” and “they obviously starve themselves” etc.
It bothers me.
You see, we have entire campaigns, and movement to stop body shaming. To stop bullying. Especially cyber-bullying. And the truth is, shaming someone because they are thin is just as awful and nasty as shaming someone because they are fat. There is NO difference.
Yes I can see the models ribs in the above photo. Hey, you know when i lay like that I can see my ribs too, and let me assure you I am not a skinny gal. I am a “Ive had 4 kids and now I wish I was as “fat” as I was when I first thought I was fat 10 years ago” kind of gal. But you know, when I see these Victorias Secret models I have never once thought they look starved or anorexic. Honestly I think it is pretty obvious they work out A LOT. And drink kale smoothies. And work out.
Wait, why we would be hating on that? Is it because we think they are “unhealthy”? Or because… maybe we feel a little crappy that we don’t work out, drink kale smoothies, then work out again so we have crazy sexy bikini bodies?
There is “I have a disease called anorexia nervosa and i need help and treatment”
And then there is “I work out and eat crazy healthy because fitness and looking my best means everything to me and my career”
You, sitting at home seeing a photo, keep your nasty comments to yourself. If they are healthy, they don’t need negative hurtful comments. If they do have a problem, and are unhealthy…. they don’t need negative hurtful comments.
I feel like I say this a lot, but let’s just appreciate the beauty in the world, not be negative and mean. Lets not hate other people (that we don’t even know 99% of the time) because we have some underlying emotion of unhappiness or insecurity that compels us to tear down someone else.
The good old saying is SO TRUE, if you don’t have anything nice to say, shut it. (It goes like that, right? )
